Alvaiazere is the nearest town to Carregal approx 4K.It has quite some history having been occupied by the Moors and the Romans. The town is at the foot of the Sierra de Alvaiazere which has spectacular views of the surrounding countryside from the peak and also hosts para gliding.

The town is developing quite quickly and has two supermarkets,two swimming pools, a modern sports stadium with a square in front where they hold Festa’s and the weekly market on Wednesdays.

There is a new museum which has a display of their heritage and a new library where you can access the internet free of charge.
